Preventative Dentistry

Twice-daily brushing and regular flossing are excellent for maintenance between office visits, but a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile require routine general and preventative care to stay that way. 

Dental Hygiene Assessment

At the first visit the dental hygienist will gather information about your past medical and dental history followed by a comprehensive oral examination. She will examine the head and neck for any lumps or bumps and examine the oral cavity for oral cancer screening. This will be implemented by state-of-the-art technology called VELscope, which facilitates the discovery of mucosal abnormalities before they become visible under ordinary light.

Once a complete dental hygiene assessment is done, which would include: periodontal pocket depth reading, plaque-biofilm and bleeding index, recession, existing and new restorations required, the dental hygienist will come up with a dental hygiene diagnosis, establishing goals with the client and selecting interventions that can move the client closer to optimal oral health.

Referrals to other health professionals will be made as needed.

Scaling

Scaling is the act of instrumentation of the crown and root surfaces of the teeth to remove bacterial plaque-biofilm, calculus, and extrinsic stains from the surfaces without the removal of tooth surface. This is performed in units of time, each unit being 15 minutes. Each client may get 4-16 units of scaling based on individual client needs, carried over a series of appointments.

Now using ORAQIX  and Cetacaine needle free anasthetic, for additional comfort during scaling & debridement.

Fluoride

In-office fluoride will be offered to clients who have a high caries risk, medications induced dry mouth, compromised salivary flow or to those who suffer from sensitive teeth. Fluoride is the most effective agent and nutrient for the prevention and control of dental caries on smooth surfaces of teeth. Fluoride prevents sensitivity by making the enamel of the teeth stronger and aids in the process of remineralization.

Desensitizing

Desensitizing agents helps to prevent/control sensitivity in teeth by either occluding the dentinal tubules or by reducing the flow of liquid in the tubules between the dentine and pulp.

Dentinal hypersensitivity may be caused either due to gingival recession or enamel loss due to erosion, abrasion (aggressive brushing technique) or attrition (grinding).

Sealants

A sealant is a thin plastic coating of an organic polymer (resin) placed in the pits and fissures of teeth to act as a physical barrier. Sealants will be recommended to clients who have newly erupted posterior teeth, undergoing orthodontics, with infrequent professional preventative care, high caries risk, and to those clients who suffer from xerostomia (dry mouth).

Mouth guards

Customized sport mouth guards will be recommended for those athletes who play contact sport, in order to protect them from oral injury.
