Why see a dental hygienist?

Bill 171 passed on September 1st, 2007, permitting dental hygienist to 'Self Initiate'. This means that dental hygienist who are authorized by the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario(CDHO) to self initiate are free to decide, based upon a comprehensive assessment, to proceed with scaling and root planing, including curetting surrounding tissues. 

Today, dental hygienist not only clean teeth, they provide a process of care that involves assessment of the oral cavity, planning, implementing treatment and evaluating individual oral care programs. As a registered health care professionals, they are responsible for the professional treatment that helps prevent periodontal (gum) disease and dental caries. In doing so, they make an important contribution to overall health.
